Abcoude — Amsterdam’s green and waterside backyard!

Our home is a 1967 corner house, admittedly not the prettiest house from the outside, but a wonderfully comfortable, spacious and light-filled family home inside. Being a corner house, we have a garden on three sides: front, side and back. The front garden has a large trampoline which has been very well loved and used over the years!

Downstairs, we have an open-plan kitchen equipped with everything you would expect: fridge, dishwasher, microwave/oven, airfryer, coffee machine and toaster. The large and bright living room opens into a spacious extension which we use as our dining room. There is a TV, and sun blinds at the back of the house for warm summer days. We also have solar panels on both sides of the roof.
Upstairs are three rooms: our master bedroom with a balcony, a bedroom with a single bed and an additional pull-out bed, and a small study. There is a bathroom with bath, shower and toilet.
On the top floor you’ll find the washing machine and dryer, as well as a large, bright bedroom with two beds and dormer windows on both sides.

Our garage is probably best described as the family sports cupboard! We have two SUP boards, three regular bikes, an electric bike and a racing bike, as well as tennis and padel rackets, footballs, a skateboard, two sets of golf clubs and a pair of inline skates (EU size 40). Depending on what you would like to use during your stay, we are happy to discuss what is available.

There is plenty of free parking: behind, beside and in front of the house. There is also a small playground just across the street.

It’s not a show home, it’s a relaxed, well-used and much-loved family home, with plenty of space to make yourself comfortable.

About the neighborhood

Abcoude is a charming village surrounded by beautiful countryside and water, yet just a stone’s throw from Amsterdam. It’s a wonderful place for running or walking through the fields, cycling, hockey, football, tennis, padel and golf, with a golf course just outside the village. The local sports centre, Sporthuis Abcoude, has a swimming pool and sports hall and is conveniently located next to the train station.

The lively village centre offers a good selection of shops, cafés and restaurants, as well as familiar stores such as HEMA and a large PLUS supermarket. There’s culture too, with performances at the Piet Mondriaan Theatre and various events throughout the year.

Abcoude is extremely well connected. Amsterdam is only about 10 minutes away by car or 20 minutes by train, Utrecht around 25 minutes by car, and Schiphol Airport about 15 minutes away.

One of the great things about living here is the combination of countryside, water and city life. You can cycle or even take a small boat from Abcoude towards the Vinkeveense Plassen, Loosdrecht or Amsterdam. Amsterdam-Zuidoost. The hospital is also within easy reach.

In short, Abcoude offers the best of both worlds: a green, friendly village surrounded by nature and water, with Amsterdam right on your doorstep. It’s a fantastic place to live and stay, with or without children.

Active family of four, a peaceful village just outside Amsterdam

We are a Dutch family of four, with two young adult children. We are an active and close family who love travelling, discovering new places and spending time outdoors. Hiking, skiing, sports and being in nature are all part of our lives, but we equally enjoy good food and spending time with friends.

Our children are now studying and starting to build their own lives, so we increasingly travel in different combinations rather than always as a family of four. This winter, for example, we will be travelling through Australia and visiting good friends who live in Melbourne.

We enjoy experiencing a place as locals. That is one of the things that appeals to us about home exchange: staying in a real neighbourhood, having a home to come back to and getting a feel for everyday life in another part of the world.

We live in a comfortable corner house in a leafy village just outside Amsterdam. We are surrounded by greenery and water, while Amsterdam is very close by, about a 10-minute drive or just 20 minutes by train. So we enjoy the best of both worlds: peace, space and nature at home, with everything Amsterdam (or Utrecht) has to offer within easy reach.

At home we have a lovely, easy-going cat who is very friendly with children. He is quite independent and uses a cat flap, so looking after him is very simple: he only needs some dry food and fresh water once a day in the morning. We are non-smokers.

Although we are new to HomeExchange, we are experienced Airbnb guests. Our hosts have consistently described us as relaxed and respectful guests and have happily recommended us to other hosts. We’d be very happy to share our Airbnb profile and reviews.
